easy calzone recipe
My husband doesn’t consider something to be a meal unless there is meat involved. After inhaling a calzone, he asked if there was anymore left. Nope, I ate it all. Well, with help from my daughter. Good thing only one of them is eating solids right now. More for Mom and Dad. The key is the fresh ingredients–buffalo mozzarella, tomatoes, basil leaves.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED TO MAKE A CAPRESE CALZONE:
- 2 cups basil leaves
- 2 medium-size tomatoes
- 1 “ball” of buffalo mozzarella
- 2 containers of pre-made pizza dough
- For serving- 1 cup, pasta sauce
HOW TO MAKE A CAPRESE CALZONE:
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
- Chop up tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella into bite-sized pieces.
- Cut each piece of pizza dough into 2 halves.
- Divide calzone ingredients equally among the 4 pieces of dough.
- Roll up the dough into a log shape and seal it by pinching the edges.
- Bake calzones for 12-15 mins, or until golden brown on the top. Enjoy!
So how do we make this delicious calzone? Start with fresh ingredients, like I mentioned.
Trim up the basil into ribbons. I used lots of basil, because gives the calzone its flavor. And who doesn’t love basil??
Chop all those fresh ingredients into bite-sized pieces.
Layer them up onto squares of pizza dough. I bought a sheet of pre-made dough, and sliced it into 4 pieces. Three cheers for pre-made pizza dough.
handy tools to make this calzone even easier:
- sheet pan – best non-stick
- serrated knife – slice things without crushing them, sharp, dishwasher safe
This is already looking yummy. Pop in the oven for a short time, and viola!
frequently asked questions
- What are some ideas for calzone fillings?
- It’s easy…anything you put on a pizza, you put in a calzone!
- What is the difference between a calzone and a stromboli?
- A Stromboli is made with square-shaped pizza dough that can be topped with any pizza toppings, and is then rolled into a log and baked. One would serve a calzone using round pizza dough that is folded in half with fillings.
- Does a calzone have sauce in it?
- Nope! Fill it with your pizza topping and then DIP it in the sauce when you eat it.
If your family is anything like mine, they’ll gobble it up. Good thing it’s easy to make. I see this meal becoming a weeknight regular in our house!

That looks so yummy! I love ANYTHING wrapped up in pizza dough!

Once they’re baked, can they be frozen? I have a several fresh tomatoes to use up but, as much as I love calzones, I can’t consume that many. If I can freeze them, I’ll pack them up with a bit of sauce (frozen in a separate container), so I can re-heat them later!
Alison L says
Yes…I would think that it would be just like a pizza in the freezer.
CJG says
Excellent! Thanks! I roasted some tomatoes the other night and I think they’d be perfect in these. And now, I’m suddenly very hungry…
