INGREDIENTS TO MAKE THIS DESSERT CHEESE BALL RECIPE:
- 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
- ½ cup butter, softened
- 1 ½ cups funfetti cake mix, dry
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- ½ cup rainbow jimmies (sprinkles)
- 1 cup Skittles
- vanilla wafers, graham crackers, fruit, or other cookies for dipping
HOW DO I MAKE THIS DESSERT CHEESE BALL?
- In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter together until combined. Then add in the Funfetti cake mix, sugar, sprinkles, powdered sugar and beat until combined.
- Place the mixture on a large piece of plastic wrap. Bring up all the corners of the plastic wrap and wrap into a ball. Freeze the ball for about 30 mins or until it is firm enough to keep its shape.
- Pull ball out of the freezer, and place on medium-sized serving platter.
- Press Skittles, one at a time, into ball, until ball is completely covered on top and sides.
- Serve with Vanilla Wafers, graham crackers, fruit, or other cookies.
I love using funfetti cake mix. It’s like three steps in one. Gives the cheese ball its shape, adds sprinkles, and cake batter flavor- yum! Of course, I threw in some extra sprinkles.
Mixing the cheese ball together is so easy, kids can totally help with that part. Just make sure the cream cheese is room temperature, or that could be quite the battle. I used my mixer; a food processor would work just as well.
HANDY TOOLS TO MAKE THESE FUNFETTI CHEESE BALL EASILY:
- Your hand mixer will work perfectly to make this a quick mixing job!
- You will want a firm spatula to get through the thicker batter and not smash the sprinkles.
I got the idea for this appetizer (dessert? side dish?) when I was looking to do a cheese ball to bring to a friend’s house to watch the basketball tournament.
Me, I can barely pull off a game of H.O.R.S.E., and don’t even know what S.W.I.S.H. stands for, but I love watching the games… while munching on decadents treats, covered in candy.
frequently asked questions
How long does a cheese ball last?
The rule of thumb here is that they will last as long as your most perishable ingredient used. With this particular recipe, I would say a week with the combination of cheeses and butter. If you take it out to serve, do not leave it at room temp for too long!
How do you eat a cheese ball?
I prefer the cookie dippers because they have substance and don’t easily break when you are scooping through the cream cheese ball. You can also serve this with graham crackers, animal crackers, or vanilla wafer cookies.
What are the best crackers for a cheese ball?
When I am eating a savory cheese ball I like a sturdy crackers like a Wheat Thin or a water cracker. Crumbly crackers do not hold up well with the stiffness of the cold cheese ball.
I decided to do a sweet cheese ball, to switch up a classic appetizer. And then I added (approx.) a million Skittles because why not?
Plus it looks so pretty, right? And I love the sprinkles on the inside. So festive. My daughter, the rainbow junkie, went nuts for it. It’s like a kid’s dream treat. It’s definitely eye-catching.
