Stencil for Cake Decorating
You know I love a good shortcut. Saving time in the kitchen = more time to enjoy food with family and friends. And that’s what it’s all about. So I love these Carvel® Ice Cream Cakes for special occasions as well as everyday celebrations.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED TO DECORATE A CAKE WITH A STENCIL:
- 1 sheet cake
- 1 cup candy necklace pieces, cut & remove string
- 1 cup chewy rainbow candies
- 1 cup rainbow chocolate candies
- ¼ cup rainbow sprinkles
DIRECTIONS TO DECORATE A CAKE WITH A STENCIL:
- Place stencil (large cookie cutter(s)) on top of cake, fill in with sprinkles.
- Remove stencil from cake.
- Add candies to the sides of the cake, clustering close together. If cake starts to melt, pop back in freezer for  5 minutes, then resume decorating.
- Once complete, serve cake and enjoy!
Conveniently located in grocery stores nationwide, I picked mine up at Jewel-Osco. You can use the store locator HERE to find where to purchase yours. I chose a Carvel® Ice Cream Cake with Confetti, made with layers of vanilla and chocolate ice cream with chocolate crunchies and fresh whipped icing. It was super easy to grab a ready-made ice cream cake, already topped with a simple design. You can customize the top with a message or add fun decorations like sprinkles and candies.
I’ve been making & decorating cakes for years, and my favorite designs look festive but take just a few minutes to do. Just pick up sprinkles at the grocery store and color coordinate them with some fun candies. You’ll also need a large cookie cutter for the stencil on the top of the cake.
It is quite handy to keep a COOKIE CUTTER SET like this on hand. There are multiple shapes and sizes!
You can really use your creativity with the sprinkle shape on top. A few ideas are stars, butterflies, letters, numbers… anything that fits the occasion! Lay the cookie cutter on top of the cake and fill in the shape with sprinkles. Don’t worry about perfection, I actually like to add a light sprinkling around the design, so go with what looks best to you.
Next, I added candies to the sides of the cake, making sure to vary up the different types. If you notice the sides of the cake melting, pop it back into the freezer halfway through decorating. The whole process takes 20 minutes at most. Super easy.

What do sprinkles taste like?
Rainbow sprinkles have no flavor added so they just taste like sugar. Chocolate jimmies have a bit of cocoa in them, but they really just taste like sugar as well.
What is the difference between sprinkles and jimmies?
Jimmies are a type of sprinkle. Sprinkles are the name of the category of things like jimmies, nonpareils, sanding sugars and coarse sugars.
Do sprinkles melt?
They will if left in the oven too long. Usually they are fine for the amount of time it takes to bake a cookie.

If your little one is in to something specific you may wonder, how to make a stencil for cake decorating? Just cut the shape out of a piece of paper – keeping the outside (extra paper) intact and then lay that on the cake. Fill in the shape with the sprinkles and remove like the stencil directions above. This is especially useful when using numbers. Then you don’t have to buy a number 3 stencil for cakes that will be used one year.
