Classic Nutter Butter cookies dipped in white chocolate and decorated like snowmen.
So fun, so easy. Your friends and family will love these for the holidays. And they’re delicious!
Nutter Butter Snowman Cookies
Start by dipping Nutter Butter Cookies in melted white chocolate.
I prefer to use white chocolate chips over other candy melts, I find that the chocolate sticks better and keeps its shape. You really want a nice, solid coat of white chocolate for these guys.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED TO MAKE NUTTER BUTTER SNOWMEN COOKIES:
- 12 Nutter Butter cookies
- 2 cups, chocolate chips
- 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
- couple marshmallows for “parent” snowmen heads
- â…“ cup white frosting
- 1-2 fruit roll-ups or “Fruit by the Foot”
- handful small candy balls
- liquid or gel food coloring (colors to your choosing)
- Optional: ¼ cup powdered sugar for plating- see note below
HOW TO MAKE NUTTER BUTTER SNOWMEN COOKIES:
- Lay out a piece of wax or parchment paper
- Stick a toothpick halfway into cookie filling at top of each cookie
- Melt chocolate chips in microwave, 20 secs at a time, stirring each time
- Add oil to melted chocolate (makes it smoother) and stir again
- Dip each cookie into chocolate and lay out flat on prepared surface
- Allow chocolate to dry and harden, minimum of 10 minutes
- Meanwhile, cut marshmallows in half, width-wise (see photo)
- Stick marshmallows into toothpicks on top of some cookies, remove toothpicks from the others
- Time to decorate! Use frosting to add candy buttons and fruit roll-up scarves (use knife to cut/shape roll-up before applying to cookie).
- Use toothpick or paint brush to add facial features and other details, have fun!
- Serving suggestion: lay out snowmen on holiday platter with powdered sugar as snow (see photo)
The toothpicks in the top of the cookies serve two purposes: (1) Makes it easier to dip the cookies in chocolate and (2) Use them to attach the marshmallow snowman head!
I wanted to make a family of snowmen, so the marshmallows allowed me to create taller “parent” snowmen.
Then you get down to the business of decorating! Any simple white frosting will do.
You can use a piping bag, seen here, or you can just dab the frosting on carefully with a knife.
I wanted mine to look colorful and fun. I love having a mix of bright colors to contrast with the white chocolate. These snowmen will really POP on a Thanksgiving dessert table.
You could even customize them to look like members of your family. Junior could be holding a baseball bat or Mom could be wearing glasses. With a little bit of candy and some food coloring, the possibilities are endless.
Don’t forget the fruit snack scarves… gotta keep those snowmen warm & toasty!
handy tools to easily make these nutter butter snowmen:
- piping bag – set comes with disposable bags for less mess, multiple tips for decorating
- sheet pan – best non-stick
Seriously… how cute are they?!
You can use whatever you have in the kitchen or tucked away in your holiday baking stash. Nuts for noses, red hots for buttons, pretzel stick arms…. you and your kids can really get creative with this one. It’s an absolute showstopper at Thanksgiving.
frequently asked questions
Do nutter butters have real peanut butter? Yes, they sure do!
What kind of chocolate do you use for dipping cookies? You can use milk, dark or white chocolate. It is always best to use bars and the best quality you can find.
Can you use chocolate chips for dipping? You can, but chocolate chips tend not to melt easily and are harder to work with.
How do you temper chocolate for dipping cookies? Tempering chocolate is the process of melting part of the chocolate, placing the bowl in a larger bowl of ice, adding the remaining chocolate and stirring to melted, and then putting back on the heat to bring it back up to temperature. If you do this, you can retemper the chocolate 2-3 more times so you don’t have to throw out any unused chocolate!
