Kids and messes go together like peanut butter and jelly. Most of the time, kids think the mess is the best part of the activity! As I write this, I’m watching my three-year-old splash as much water out of our water table as possible. For her, the fun is in exploring her environment and making a mess.
So I knew both my girls would enjoy making this “ice cream” play dough that only takes 2 ingredients. Yep! Just two.
Equal parts frosting and powdered sugar. Which means it smells amazing… sweet, a bit like vanilla, and definitely a lot like ice cream.
And the colors are so fun! My eight year old LOVED being able to mix up the play dough herself. No stove top necessary, no fancy ingredients. Just add the powdered sugar to the frosting and stir.

frequently asked questions
Is play dough safe for two year olds?
Yes. Store bought play dough does indicate it is safe for kids 2 years and up.
Why is play dough good for child development?
This simple preschool staple lets children use their imaginations and strengthen the small muscles in their fingers—the same muscles they will one day use to hold a pencil and write. Using play dough with you, a friend, or siblings supports your child’s social skills such as sharing, taking turns, and enjoying being with other people.
