easy diy rewards box
It’s back-to-school season, and in our house, that means getting back on track with a chore & rewards system. It certainly helps in the craziness of fine-tuning a new family schedule.
I used one of our empty Kleenex boxes to create a “rewards box” for my girls. It’s especially useful with my preschooler, who is just starting school this year. I really want to encourage good behavior and habits with her.
MATERIALS NEEDED TO MAKE THIS PRIZE BOX HACK:
- 1 kleenex box, emptied
- clear tape
- stickers or markers to decorate outside of box
- trinkets/prizes to put inside (Tip! Head to the dollar store or dollar spot!)
DIRECTIONS FOR MAKING THIS PRIZE BOX HACK:
- Kids love to help with this project! Have them decorate the outside of the box to their liking.
- Open side of box and add prizes (or you can keep them secret and do it yourself!).
- Tape side back up and keep in sight for motivation! Use as the kids earn rewards.
The concept is so simple. Open the side of the Kleenex box, add little inexpensive trinkets (age appropriate, of course), and seal it back up.
You can then decorate the outside of the box, or have the kiddos do it!
It’s so simple, but seriously effective… have the kids pick a trinket every time they show good behavior or a make a series of good choices. You could even come up with tally system or do points for this. Whatever works best for your family. Keep it simple, so it works for you!
Kids can pick a trinket they have their eye on, or for a fun surprise– hold the box high & have them choose sight-unseen. They could even pick the little rewards in the store themselves. Very motivating!
frequently asked questions
What do you put in a reward box?
Things like pretty pencils, whistles, plastic harmonicas, paper fans, bouncy balls, glowsticks, pretty hair bands – almost anything from the dollar store, dollar spot at local stores, or anything I can buy online…think less than one dollar per item.
What are good toddler rewards?
I do like the concept of earning stickers for a larger prize (over a dollar). I have also had great success buying a set that the kids like and giving them pieces of it as they earn it. Little People sets, Duplo sets…that type of thing. Going to fun places they like are awesome things to earn also!
