How To Make Mulled Wine
Start by pouring wine and brandy (or cognac) into a medium pot on the stovetop. Add in honey and sprinkle in sugar & mulling spices, to taste.
Finish off with orange and apple slices. Heat mixture to just boiling.
Boil for about 30 seconds, stirring constantly to blend sweeteners into wine. Next turn down heat to simmer and stir occasionally for 10-15 minutes or until well-blended.
Turn off heat and strain mulled wine into heat-safe serving bowl or pitcher. Pour into glasses mugs and garnish with fresh fruit slices and additional mulling spices.
Cooking Tips
- It’s easiest to purchase a package of mulling spices instead of individual items (cinnamon sticks, star anise). More budget-friendly, as well.
- Be careful not to boil the liquid for longer than the 30 seconds required to incorporate the sugar. You do not want the alcohol to burn off.
- Use a fine mesh strainer for this mulled wine. The spices can break into tiny pieces and you want to catch them all before serving the wine.
- During prep time, save some fruit slices and spices for garnishing the drinks when serving.
